I’m sorry to say, but your kid’s high school is probably preparing them for college the wrong way.

Actually, most high schools suck at getting students college success.

In most cases it’s not intentional. They really mean well, but what students need and what high schools are able to provide are miles apart.

Going to College and Affording College Are Very Different

I learned this lesson years ago when it was my job to get kids to college. I was helping my students with financial aid paperwork, taking them on college tours, and even supporting them with their college admission essays.

We rejoiced every time a student came in waving an acceptance letter in the air.

Their parents were beaming with pride. The school boasted about their college admission numbers rising, and the students thanked me for helping them realize their college dream.

All was well until they actually got to college.

Sometimes it was after one semester. Sometimes after two or three, but without fail, I would learn that the pursuit of a college degree had come to a halt for many of my students.
