What’s good for the school isn’t always good for the student. And this mismatch in priorities is the first reason high schools suck at getting students college success.

We’ve seen the headlines.

100% of High School’s Graduating Class Heading to College!

While this is certainly a noteworthy accomplishment, what most of us are cheering for is something yet to be determined.

What we don’t know is how many of those students actually graduate from college.

“Getting In” and “Getting Out” are Different

This is the first challenge that parents face when relying on high schools to help their kids get a college education. There is a mismatch in priorities.

High schools were designed to help students earn a diploma, but because of the push for college over the past few decades, they’ve been forced to support students’ quest for a college degree. This support, though, doesn’t always turn out favorable for students and their parents.

As parents, we have to stop interpreting “getting to” college as “getting through” college. Most high schools are not equipped to actually help students graduate from college.
